Steve Collins

Undefeated Super-Middleweight World Champion boxer, Steve Collins, was born in Cabra, Dublin on 21st July 1964. As an amateur boxer, Steve won the Irish junior heavyweight, light-heavyweight and middleweight titles. Turning professional at the middleweight discipline in Massachusetts in 1986. As a full-time boxer, Collins went on to win the Irish middleweight title against Sam Story in Boston in 1988 and later beat the world no.5 at the time, Kevin Watts, during a sequence of 16 straight wins before being out pointed by Mike McCallum over 12 rounds in a world W.B.A middleweight championship title fight in Boston in February 1990. In April 1992 he was again beaten on points for the W.B.A. middleweight championship of the world, this time by Reggie Johnson, in Meadowlands, New Jersey. Also losing the E.B.U. decider to Sumbu Kalumbay, in 1993 he won the W.B.C. Penta Continental title in a fight against Gerhald Botes of South Africa.

Following that success in 1993, Steve had another tilt at a title attempt, this time against Chris Pyatt where he stopped him in five rounds to land the W.B.O Middleweight title.

Steve’s most memorable fight came when he defeated Chris Eubank on points for the W.B.O. Super-Middleweight world championship in Cork in March 1995. Eubank’s mandatory return fight was to prove Collins stronger again when they fought for a second time again in Cork, once again, Collins winning on points. Collins retired in 1997 with his title after defending his super-middleweight crown a total of seven times; including two notable fights against Nigel Benn.

He retired with a record of 39 fights, 36 wins and only 3 loses. Since Steve’s retirement he has gone on to feature in a number media roles and projects. These include an appearance in a U2 music video with Bono and a part in Guy Richie’s hit film, Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels.

John Conteh

John Conteh was born in Kirkby, Liverpool, on May 27th 1951, and took up boxing aged just 10. Just 9 years later he won the Amateur Boxing Association belt, and by 1970, he was competing at the Commonwealth Games where took the Middleweight Gold. It was 4 years later aged 23 when he won the WBC Light Heavyweight Crown,beating the Argentinian Jorge Ahumada. In doing so, he became the first British Boxer for more than 25 years to hold the Championship belt. After being stripped of his title for not taking a mandated defence, he then attempted to regain his crown, but this ended in points decision defeat after 15 rounds against the Croatian, Mate Parlov. After two further attempts to regain his World Title failed, both fights with American Matthew Saad Mohammed, he retired from professional Boxing in 1980.

In 1974, John competed in and won the hugely successful BBC TV Series ‘Superstars’, further endearing him to the British public.

John remains one of the country’s most popular and successful boxing champions to this day. At his peak, he was considered good enough to be touted as an opponent of the great Muhammad Ali on a number of occasions and subsequently enjoyed fame in Britain and was often on the front as well as the back pages of the leading newspapers.

Frank Bruno

Frank Bruno MBE is one of the best known and most successful boxers in the history of the sport in Britian and even since retiring in 1996, Frank remains a very popular personality and is held in high regard and fondly in the hearts of the British public. He’s probably best known by none boxing fans for his use of the word “Harry” due to his rapport with BBC Boxing commentator Harry Carpenter.

Born in 1961, Frank was raised by his parents and five siblings in South London and having taken up boxing from an early age and after having a successful amateur career, Bruno turned professional in 1982 at the age of 21. His rapid rise to stardom and popularity was due to his agile style for a heavyweight fighter and an impressive streak of 21 consecutive fight wins via knock-out.

By the end of his career in 1996, Bruno’s record read an impressive 45 fights, 40 wins of which, 38 came via K.O. The highlight of his career came in 1995 when he beat Oliver McCall at Wembley Stadium to be crowned WBC Heavyweight champion of the world.
