The Stig – Perry McCarthy

Perry McCarthy is better known as ‘The Stig’ from the hit BBC TV show Top Gear and you can now book Perry to appear at your event, be it for one of his hilarious after dinner speeches or motivational talk.

Perry’s story of how he got in to formula 1 is fascinating and after it was haltered on occasions by a lack of finance, his determination saw him keep alive his dreams becoming a Grand Prix driver. His likeable personality and refusal to concede defeat in his lifetime ambition made him a storied driver and popular with the media. Stories ran in various newspapers about his plight with headlines including ‘a new cult hero’ and ‘the world’s unluckiest racing driver’ by the Telegraph and Times respectively and an article ran in the Sunday Express in America which referred to him as a ‘comedian locked inside a racing driver’s body’.

His dream was fulfilled in 1992 when he had one season driving Forumla One for the Andrea Moda team before later going on to drive in the 24 Hour Le Mans on a number of occasions, driving for Viper and Audi UK amongst others.

His work as ‘The Stig’ catapulted Perry to fame before people even knew who was under the mask of Top Gear’s anonymous driver of high performance cars who wore a black suit. The mystique which surrounded discussion about ‘who is the Stig?’ only added to the character’s popularity. When Perry released his autobiography, revealing his identity he no longer worked on Top Gear but can now be booked to entertain the crowds for any occasion and he really is as interesting and humorous as you’d expect (and more…).

His early career was meteoric, with works drives for both Jaguar and HWM. 1955 was a seminal year; he was signed by Mercedes-Benz to partner the legendary World Champion Juan Manuel Fangio. That year saw Stirling shadow the great Argentine in most Grands Prix, beating him to win the British GP at Aintree. Famously in that same year, he also won the incredible Mille Miglia, at an average speed of 97.9mph over the 1,000 miles raced, the Targa Florio and the Tourist Trophy at Goodwood.

“In 1955 he was signed up by Mercedes-Benz to partner World Champion Fangio…”
For four years he would finish runner-up in the F1 World Championship, his sportsmanship at the Portuguese GP allowing Mike Hawthorn to win the 1958 Championship title by half a point at his expense.

After Mercedes Benz retired from motoring following the 1955 Le Mans tragedy, Stirling led the Maserati and Vanwall teams. He also continued to drive saloon and sports cars and during his remarkable career drove more than 80 different types of car.

In the late 1950’s and early 1960’s, he led the changeover to rear engined F1 cars, achieving the first victory for such a car at the 1958 Argentine GP and was in a class of his own during this period. A near-fatal accident ended it all in 1962 at Goodwood.

Once the decision to retire from competitive motoring racing was made Stirling expanded his commercial interests with the same vigor that he employed when racing, chief amongst these being his property business, which he runs to this day with his family. He also designed his home in Mayfair which incorporated home comforts and gadgets which were ahead of their time in the 1960’s, including an automated system for running a bath at a pre-set temperature, which could be triggered by pushing a button on one of many control panels located around the house. Stirling is well known for his love of design and the latest gadget.

One of the original jet-setters, he remains in huge demand around the world to this day, fulfilling engagements and competing in historic racing – a true British legend.
