As a player The Birch played over 160 games for Leicester City, and made over 400 career appearances with Sheffield United, Chelsea, Leicester, Notts County, Blackburn, Luton and Hereford. He is most fondly remembered by the Leicester City faithful for his six years as a striker-turned-midfielder as a member of the ‘Bloomfield Boys’. Alan starred alongside England internationals Frank Worthington, Keith Weller, Peter Shilton and Steve Whitworth under the inspired managership of Jimmy Bloomfield.

Born in East London, Alan made Leicestershire his home when he became the club’s public relations officer over 25 years ago. During that time he has established an excellent rapport with the Leicester public and has come to be looked upon as Mr Leicester City.
