“Smudger” began his footballing journey at non-league Alvechurch, he was an instant hit which led to him signing professional forms with Leicester City in the summer of 1982. He scored 13 goals in his first season where he partnered Gary Lineker up front, helping fire the Foxes to promotion to the First Division. In five seasons at Leicester, he scored 84 goals in 206 appearances.

George Graham’s signed him for Arsenal for £850,000 in 1987, and by the 1988-89, Smith had become an established marskmen, notching 23 goals to make him the First Division’s top scorer, helping the Gunners to their first League title in 18 years. Alan won the League Championship in again with Arsenal in 1990-91 (scoring 22 goals that season) and has by now made his International debut for England. He played 13 times and scored two goals for his country. Alan also played four times for the England B team, scoring four goals.
His success at Arsenal continued; and he was part of the side that won the FA Cup and League Cup “double” in 1993. He most notably scored the only goal of Arsenal’s 1-0 victory in the Cup Winners’ Cup final against Parma in 1994. Alan became the clubs 12th top goalscorer of all time, scoring 115 goals in 345 matches, and only ever received one booking in his entire footballing career, coming in extra-time of the 1993 FA Cup Final replay against Sheffield Wednesday.
Since retiring from the game, Alan has worked as a regular pundit for Sky Sports and as a columnist for The Daily Telegraph.
